Land Rover Discovery 1 300Tdi: change gearbox & transfer box oil

Transmission · Discovery 1 (1989–98) · 1994–1998

How often: every 24,000 mi or 2 yrs, whichever comes first. Fresh oil keeps the synchromesh and transfer box bearings healthy.

Some of these intervals are more frequent than Land Rover's original schedule. That is deliberate for older vehicles.

Main gearboxR380 5-speed: ATF Dexron IID (later MTF 94), ≈2.4–2.67 L · or ZF 4HP22 4-speed automatic: ATF Dexron IID, ≈8.5–9.1 L from dry (a drain and filter change takes about 4 L)
Transfer boxLT230: 80W-90 (GL-4) or ATF Dexron IID (refill with whichever was drained), ≈2.3–2.8 L

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
