Land Rover Discovery 2 4.0 V8: ace / sls system check
Suspension · Discovery 2 (1998–2004) · 1998–2004
How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Active Cornering Enhancement uses high-pressure hydraulic pipes that rust and burst; self-levelling (SLS) rear air springs perish. Many Discovery 2s have one or both.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
Parts
ACE fluid (only the specified fluid) (check the reservoir cap)
SLS air spring (if cracked)
Tools
Torch
Soapy water spray
Step by step
ACE: check the reservoir level and look along the pipes under the vehicle, especially the rear section and the clips, for corrosion and weeping.
Check the ACE actuators at each anti-roll bar for leaks.
SLS: park overnight and look for the rear sitting low; spray the rear air springs with soapy water to find leaks.
Check for ACE or SLS warnings on the dash, and read codes with a suitable tool.
