Land Rover Discovery 4 2.7 TDV6 diesel: timing belt (and fuel pump belt where fitted)

Engine · Discovery 4 (2009–16) · 2009–2010

How often: every 105,000 mi or 7 yrs, whichever comes first. A failed belt destroys the engine. This is the most expensive job to miss.

Front timing belt and rear fuel-pump belt, with tensioners and idlers. Land Rover's figure is about 105,000 miles or 7 years; many specialists change them at 6 years or 100,000 miles

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Timing belt kit (Front timing belt and rear fuel-pump belt, with tensioners and idlers. Land Rover's figure is about 105,000 miles or 7 years; many specialists change them at 6 years or 100,000 miles) LR016655 + LR019115 (fuel pump)
Tools
  • Engine-specific locking tools
  • Torque wrench
  • Workshop manual

Step by step

  1. This needs the engine-specific locking tools and the workshop manual procedure. On V6 diesels both the front timing belt and the rear fuel pump belt are changed.
  2. Renew the tensioners and idlers with the belts.
  3. Turn the engine by hand two full turns and recheck the timing before starting.
  4. Log the date and mileage: the time limit matters as much as the mileage.
