Land Rover Freelander 1 1.8 K-series petrol: timing belt (and fuel pump belt where fitted)

Engine · Freelander 1 (1997–2006) · 1997–2006

How often: every 72,000 mi or 7 yrs, whichever comes first. A failed belt destroys the engine. This is the most expensive job to miss.

K-series timing belt and tensioner (specialists' figure: 72,000 miles or 7 years)

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Timing belt kit (K-series timing belt and tensioner (specialists' figure: 72,000 miles or 7 years)) LHN100560L (auto tensioner, from mid-1999) / LHN100390 (earlier)
Tools
  • Engine-specific locking tools
  • Torque wrench
  • Workshop manual

Step by step

  1. This needs the engine-specific locking tools and the workshop manual procedure. On V6 diesels both the front timing belt and the rear fuel pump belt are changed.
  2. Renew the tensioners and idlers with the belts.
  3. Turn the engine by hand two full turns and recheck the timing before starting.
  4. Log the date and mileage: the time limit matters as much as the mileage.
