Range Rover L322 4.4 V8 / 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (Jaguar): service: engine oil & filter

Engine · Range Rover L322 (2002–12) · 2005–2009

How often: every 15,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. The core of every Land Rover service. Modern turbo engines and DPFs depend on the exact oil specification, not just the viscosity.

Many specialists halve this interval on high-mileage diesels, short-trip cars and anything that tows.

Engine oil5W-20 to WSS-M2C925-A (check the cap)
Oil capacity≈7–8.5 L. Many later models have no dipstick: check the level in the instrument menu

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Engine oil (5W-20 to WSS-M2C925-A (check the cap); ≈7–8.5 L)
  • Oil filter (to suit engine) LR031439
  • Sump plug washer (or sump plug and washer) LR073675
Tools
  • Drain tray
  • Socket set
  • Filter housing socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Diagnostic tool to reset the service indicator

Step by step

  1. Warm the engine, park level, and lift or raise the vehicle safely (on air suspension, select the jacking/workshop mode first so it does not move under you).
  2. Remove the engine undertray. Drain the oil and renew the sump plug washer (some engines need a new plug).
  3. Renew the filter: cartridge types unscrew the housing cap; fit the new O-rings supplied and tighten the cap to the torque on it.
  4. Refill with 5W-20 to WSS-M2C925-A (check the cap). Start, check for leaks, then check the level after a few minutes on the dipstick or in the instrument menu (≈7–8.5 L).
  5. Reset the service indicator with the menu or a diagnostic tool, and log the service here.
