Land Rover Series I 1.6 / 2.0 petrol: adjust drum brakes & handbrake

Brakes · Series I (1948–58) · 1948–1958

How often: every 6,000 mi or 6 months, whichever comes first. Series drum brakes need regular adjustment as the shoes wear.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Tools
  • Spanner for adjusters
  • Jack & axle stands
  • Chocks

Step by step

  1. Chock the wheels and jack each wheel clear of the ground in turn.
  2. Turn each snail-cam adjuster on the back-plate until the shoes lock the drum, then back it off until the wheel just turns freely.
  3. Two-leading-shoe front brakes (109): adjust both cams on each wheel.
  4. Handbrake: the drum is on the back of the transfer box. Adjust it at the back-plate adjuster until the lever holds the vehicle on 3–4 clicks.
  5. Check the fluid level and road-test in a safe place.
