Land Rover Series II 2.25 petrol: carburettor & fuel pump service

Fuel & air · Series II (1958–61) · 1958–1961

How often: every 6,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Dirty gauzes and worn linkages give flat spots, flooding and poor starting.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Fuel pump sediment bowl gasket (if needed)
  • Inline fuel filter (if fitted)
Tools
  • Screwdrivers
  • Spanners
  • CO meter or Colortune (optional)

Step by step

  1. Clean the sediment bowl and gauze on the mechanical fuel pump. Refit with a new gasket and check for leaks.
  2. Inspect the fuel lines and rubber hoses for perishing, especially near the exhaust.
  3. Check the throttle and choke linkages move freely and return fully. A worn throttle spindle lets air in and makes idle unstable.
  4. With the engine warm, set idle speed and mixture as your manual describes.
