Land Rover Series IIA 2.6 six-cylinder petrol: grease propshafts & nipples
Driveline · Series IIA (1961–71) · 1967–1971
How often: every 3,000 mi or 6 months, whichever comes first. Dry universal joints and splines fail suddenly and can drop a propshaft.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
Parts
Lithium EP2 grease (grease-gun cartridge)
Tools
Grease gun
Rag
Step by step
Wipe each nipple clean before you attach the gun.
Grease both universal joints and the sliding spline on the front and rear propshafts until fresh grease shows at the seals.
Early vehicles (Series I and early Series II): grease the spring shackle pins and any other nipples on the chassis.
Check each UJ for play by twisting the shaft against the flange. Any clunk means a new joint.
