Land Rover Series III 3.5 V8: inspect brake shoes, cylinders & hoses
Brakes · Series III (1971–85) · 1979–1985
How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Seized or leaking wheel cylinders are common on vehicles that sit for long periods.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
Parts
Brake shoes (axle set, if worn)
Wheel cylinders (if leaking)
Flexible brake hoses (if cracked)
Tools
Jack & axle stands
Brake cleaner
Dust mask
Step by step
Remove each drum. Do not blow the dust about; wipe with brake cleaner.
Check lining thickness and that linings are not oily.
Peel back the wheel cylinder boots. Fluid behind them means a leak; replace the cylinder.
Check every flexible hose for cracks and bulges, and the steel pipes for rust under the clips.
