Land Rover Defender 200Tdi: grease propshafts

Driveline · Defender (1990–2016) · 1990–1994

How often: every 6,000 mi or 6 months, whichever comes first. Dry universal joints and splines fail suddenly.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Lithium EP2 grease (grease-gun cartridge)
Tools
  • Grease gun
  • Rag

Step by step

  1. Wipe each nipple clean. Grease both UJs and the sliding joint on each propshaft.
  2. Check each UJ for play by twisting the shaft against its flange.
  3. Check the propshaft flange bolts are tight.
