Land Rover Defender Puma 2.2 TDCi: dpf & egr health check

Engine · Defender (1990–2016) · 2012–2016

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Short trips stop the diesel particulate filter cleaning itself. A blocked DPF puts the engine into limp mode.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Step by step

  1. Check for any DPF warning on the dash.
  2. If you mostly do short trips, run the vehicle at a steady 50–60 mph for 20 minutes every couple of weeks so it can regenerate.
  3. With a code reader, check soot loading and any stored EGR codes.
