Land Rover Defender Td5: centrifugal oil filter rotor

Engine · Defender (1990–2016) · 1998–2007

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. The Td5 has a second, centrifugal filter. A blocked rotor stops cleaning the oil. Land Rover renews it at every 12,000-mile oil change.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Centrifuge rotor & O-ring ERR6299
Tools
  • Socket set

Step by step

  1. Remove the centrifuge cover (front of engine, near the oil filter).
  2. Lift out the rotor. A thick layer of sludge means the oil has been changed too rarely.
  3. Fit the new rotor and O-ring, refit the cover and check for leaks.
