How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Oil wicks along the injector harness into the ECU plug, causing misfires and limp mode.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Step by step
Unplug the engine harness connector at the ECU (Defender: behind the right seat base; Discovery 2: see your manual for the ECU position).
Look inside the plug for oil. Any oil means the injector harness is wicking.
Clean the connector with contact cleaner. If oil returns, fit an updated injector harness (or the plug-in harness kit).
