How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Heavy vehicles wear pads quickly, and mud wears them faster.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Step by step
Remove the wheels. Check pad thickness; replace at 3 mm.
Check discs for scoring, lips and minimum thickness (stamped on the disc or in your manual).
Check the caliper pistons are not seized: the pads should move freely.
Check flexible hoses and steel pipes, especially pipes on the rear axle.
