Land Rover Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 / SD4 / eD4 diesel: auxiliary belt & tensioner check

Engine · Freelander 2 (2006–14) · 2006–2014

How often: every 16,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. On many of these engines the auxiliary belt drives the water pump and alternator; a snapped belt can be pulled into the timing belt cover.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Auxiliary belt (if cracked)
Tools
  • Torch

Step by step

  1. Check the belt for cracks, missing ribs and glazing.
  2. Check the tensioner holds steady with the engine running and the pulleys run quietly.
