Land Rover Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 / SD4 / eD4 diesel: timing belt (and fuel pump belt where fitted)

Engine · Freelander 2 (2006–14) · 2006–2014

How often: every 112,000 mi or 7 yrs, whichever comes first. A failed belt destroys the engine. This is the most expensive job to miss.

Timing belt (it drives one camshaft; a short chain links the two) with tensioner and idler. Land Rover has cut this interval over the years, from 10 years or 150,000 miles on early cars to 7 years or 112,000 miles. Do it at 7 years

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Timing belt kit (Timing belt (it drives one camshaft; a short chain links the two) with tensioner and idler. Land Rover has cut this interval over the years, from 10 years or 150,000 miles on early cars to 7 years or 112,000 miles. Do it at 7 years) LR032526 (kit) / LR004257 (belt)
Tools
  • Engine-specific locking tools
  • Torque wrench
  • Workshop manual

Step by step

  1. This needs the engine-specific locking tools and the workshop manual procedure. On V6 diesels both the front timing belt and the rear fuel pump belt are changed.
  2. Renew the tensioners and idlers with the belts.
  3. Turn the engine by hand two full turns and recheck the timing before starting.
  4. Log the date and mileage: the time limit matters as much as the mileage.
