Range Rover Classic 300Tdi: check gearbox, transfer & axle oil levels

Transmission · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1994–1996

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Low oil in the transfer box or diffs wears gears and bearings quickly.

Main gearboxR380 5-speed (ATF Dexron IID or MTF 94, ≈2.4 L; check the tag) or ZF 4HP22 4-speed automatic: ATF Dexron IID, ≈8.5–9.1 L from dry (a drain and filter change takes about 4 L)
Transfer boxLT230 with viscous coupling: 80W-90, ≈2.8 L
DifferentialsEP90 / 80W-90 hypoid to API GL-4, ≈1.7 L each axle

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Gear oil / ATF top-up
Tools
  • Spanners
  • Oil pump

Step by step

  1. Park level. Remove the level plugs on the gearbox, transfer box and both diffs in turn and top up each.
  2. Check the transfer box output seals: oil leaking onto the handbrake drum (rear of the transfer box) stops the handbrake working.
  3. Check the axle and gearbox breather pipes are not kinked or blocked.
