Range Rover Classic 300Tdi: fuel filter change & bleed

Fuel & air · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1994–1996

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Water and dirt destroy injection pumps and injectors.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Fuel filter element (with sealing rings) AEU2147L
  • Clean diesel to pre-fill
Tools
  • Filter wrench
  • Rags
  • Container

Step by step

  1. Clean around the filter head. Unscrew the filter and catch the diesel.
  2. Oil or wet the new seal with diesel. Fill the new filter with clean diesel if you can, then fit it hand tight.
  3. Bleed: open the bleed screw on the filter head and operate the lift-pump priming lever (or hand primer) until fuel flows without bubbles. Close it.
  4. Crank the engine in short bursts. If it will not start, bleed at the injection pump bleed screw as your manual describes.
  5. Check for leaks with the engine running.
