Range Rover P38 2.5 DSE diesel (BMW): air suspension check (eas)
Suspension · Range Rover P38 (1994–2002) · 1994–2002
How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Perished air springs, a tired compressor and leaking valve block seals leave the vehicle on its bump stops.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
Parts
Air spring (if cracked)
Compressor piston seal / dryer (if slow to pump up)
Tools
Soapy water spray
Torch
EAS diagnostic tool (e.g. Faultmate, Nanocom or RSW EAS software)
Step by step
Park overnight on level ground. A corner that has dropped by morning has a leak.
Spray soapy water on each air spring (especially the folds at the bottom), the pipe joints and the valve block; bubbles show the leak.
Time the compressor raising the vehicle from access to standard height. A slow or very hot compressor needs a new piston ring or dryer.
Read EAS fault codes with a diagnostic tool, and clear them after a repair; the system stays in fault mode until cleared.
