Range Rover P38 2.5 DSE diesel (BMW): cooling system & viscous fan check

Cooling · Range Rover P38 (1994–2002) · 1994–2002

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. The BMW M51 cracks its cylinder head if it overheats. A slipping viscous fan or a blocked radiator is usually the start.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Antifreeze for top-up (≈11.3 L, 50% antifreeze)
Tools
  • Torch
  • Rolled newspaper (fan test)

Step by step

  1. Check the coolant level cold and look for leaks at the plastic expansion tank and hoses.
  2. Hot engine, stopped: the viscous fan should resist being turned (use a rolled newspaper, never fingers).
  3. Clean leaves and mud from between the radiator and the intercooler and air-con condenser.
