ENGINE · EVERY 15,000 MI / 1 YR
Service: engine oil & filter
The core of every Land Rover service. Modern turbo engines and DPFs depend on the exact oil specification, not just the viscosity.
Many specialists halve this interval on high-mileage diesels, short-trip cars and anything that tows.
Parts
Engine oil (5W-20 to WSS-M2C925-A (check the cap); ≈7–8.5 L)
Oil filter (to suit engine)LR031439
Sump plug washer (or sump plug and washer)LR073675
Tools
Drain tray
Socket set
Filter housing socket
Torque wrench
Diagnostic tool to reset the service indicator
Steps
Warm the engine, park level, and lift or raise the vehicle safely (on air suspension, select the jacking/workshop mode first so it does not move under you).
Remove the engine undertray. Drain the oil and renew the sump plug washer (some engines need a new plug).
Renew the filter: cartridge types unscrew the housing cap; fit the new O-rings supplied and tighten the cap to the torque on it.
Refill with 5W-20 to WSS-M2C925-A (check the cap). Start, check for leaks, then check the level after a few minutes on the dipstick or in the instrument menu (≈7–8.5 L).
Reset the service indicator with the menu or a diagnostic tool, and log the service here.

Pollen (cabin) filter
A blocked filter weakens the blower and mists the windows.
Parts
Pollen filter JKR500010 / LR170345
Tools
Trim tools
Steps
Find the filter (behind the glovebox or under the scuttle panel, depending on model).
Note the airflow arrow, fit the new one the same way.
FUEL & AIR · EVERY 30,000 MI / 2 YRS
Air filter element
Turbo engines lose power and economy, and the airflow sensor gets dirty, when the filter blocks.
Bulkhead uses every second service; check your Maintenance Check Sheet for your exact vehicle.
Parts
Air filter PHE000112
Tools
Screwdrivers / Torx
Steps
Release the airbox lid and lift out the element.
Wipe out the box, check the seal, fit the new element so it seats all round.
Check the intake ducts for splits. Inspect more often in dusty use.
IGNITION · EVERY 60,000 MI / 7 YRS
Spark plugs
Worn plugs cause misfires that can damage the catalytic converters.
Check the plug interval on your Maintenance Check Sheet; Land Rover's varies by engine.
Parts
Spark plugs (long-life plugs to suit engine (one per cylinder))
Tools
Plug socket
Torque wrench
Trim tools for coil covers
Steps
Remove the engine covers and the coils one at a time.
Blow dirt out of the plug wells before removing each plug.
Fit the new plugs to the specified torque; don't use anti-seize unless your manual says so.
Refit the coils firmly and clear any misfire codes.
ENGINE · EVERY 15,000 MI / 1 YR
Auxiliary belt & tensioner check
On many of these engines the auxiliary belt drives the water pump and alternator; a snapped belt can be pulled into the timing belt cover.
Parts
Auxiliary belt (if cracked)
Tools
Torch
Steps
Check the belt for cracks, missing ribs and glazing.
Check the tensioner holds steady with the engine running and the pulleys run quietly.
COOLING · EVERY 10 YRS
Coolant change (10-year)
Land Rover renews the coolant every 10 years regardless of mileage. Check the level and strength every service.
Parts
Antifreeze concentrate (OAT antifreeze to Land Rover spec)
Hoses & clips (if needed) (replace any soft, swollen or cracked hoses)
Tools
Drain tray
Garden hose
Screwdrivers
Hydrometer or refractometer
Steps
Work on a cold engine only. Remove the expansion tank or radiator cap slowly.
Open the radiator drain (or remove the bottom hose) and the cylinder block drain tap or plug. Set the heater to hot.
Flush with clean water until it runs clear. Squeeze every hose: replace any that feel soft, crunchy or swollen.
Check the radiator fins, fan blades and (where fitted) the viscous coupling. A viscous fan should turn with some resistance when the engine is warm.
Refill with a 50% antifreeze mix (OAT antifreeze to Land Rover spec). Fill slowly to avoid air locks; on coil-sprung models use the bleed screw on the thermostat housing or radiator top where fitted.
Run the engine to working temperature with the cap off (or loose), top up as the level drops, refit the cap and check again when cold.
BRAKES · EVERY 15,000 MI / 1 YR
Brakes, tyres & suspension inspection
Heavy vehicles with big wheels wear pads, discs and tyres quickly.
Parts
Brake pads (if under 3 mm)
Brake discs (if under minimum)
Tools
Jack and stands (or a lift)
Vernier
Torch
Steps
Check pad thickness and disc condition on every wheel (many models also have pad wear sensors).
Check tyres for wear, damage and age; check the spare.
Look for leaks at the dampers, and check ball joints and bushes for play.
Check brake pipes and hoses for corrosion and chafing.
BRAKES · EVERY 3 YRS
Brake fluid change
Land Rover renews brake fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage.
Parts
Brake fluid (DOT4 low-viscosity brake fluid to Land Rover spec (ESP/ABS systems))
Tools
Pressure bleeder
Diagnostic tool (ABS bleed routine on some models)
Steps
Bleed each wheel in the order in your workshop manual.
Some models need an ABS bleed routine run with a diagnostic tool.
Check the pedal is firm before driving.
TRANSMISSION · EVERY 60,000 MI / 5 YRS
Transfer box & locking-diff oil
Land Rover changes the transfer box and rear locking diff oil every 5 years on vehicles that have them.
Check your vehicle has a two-speed transfer box (a low-range button) and an electronic locking rear diff.
Drain and refill each to its level plug with the specified fluid.
TRANSMISSION · EVERY 60,000 MI / 6 YRS
Automatic gearbox fluid & differentials
Land Rover lists these fluids as long-life (changed at 10 years on many models). Specialists change the automatic gearbox fluid and filter, and the diff oils, sooner on a vehicle that tows or is kept beyond its warranty.
Bulkhead's advisory interval. The official Land Rover interval is longer; check your Maintenance Check Sheet.
Parts
ATF (ZF Lifeguard fluid for ZF gearboxes)
Gearbox sump pan / filter (to suit gearbox; the sump pan includes the filter on the 8-speed)
Differential oil (Land Rover-specified fluid)
Tools
Socket set
Fluid pump
Diagnostic tool (to read fluid temperature)
Steps
The ZF automatics are filled at a set fluid temperature (about 35–45 °C) with the engine running: you need a diagnostic tool to read it.
Renew the sump pan or filter and refill to the level plug as the workshop manual describes.
Drain and refill the front and rear differentials (and the transfer unit/PTU on transverse-engined models).
SUSPENSION · EVERY 15,000 MI / 1 YR
Air suspension check
Air springs perish with age; a leak makes the compressor overwork and fail.
Parts
Air spring (if leaking)
Tools
Soapy water spray
Diagnostic tool
Steps
Park overnight on level ground; note any corner that has dropped.
Spray the air springs (folds at the bottom) and pipe joints with soapy water to find leaks.
Read the suspension codes; listen for the compressor running for long periods.
BRAKES · EVERY 15,000 MI / 1 YR
Electric parking brake check
The electric park brake must hold on a slope; some models use small drum shoes inside the rear discs that need adjusting.
Parts
None
Tools
Diagnostic tool
Steps
Check it holds the vehicle on a steep slope.
Models with drum-in-disc shoes: check and adjust them as your manual describes (a diagnostic tool may be needed to set service mode).
Never work on the rear brakes without putting the EPB into service mode first.
BODY & CHASSIS · EVERY 1 YR
Underbody & corrosion check
Subframes, brake pipes and (on the Discovery 3/4 and Sport L320) the steel frame corrode in salty winters.
Parts
Cavity wax / underbody protection
