Land Rover Series III 2.25 diesel: annual safety inspection

Safety · Series III (1971–85) · 1971–1985

How often: every year. In the UK, vehicles over 40 years old can be MOT-exempt, but they still need to be roadworthy. Do this every year anyway.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Bulbs & fuses (spares, if needed)
  • 2 × Wiper blades (if worn)
Tools
  • Helper
  • Tyre gauge

Step by step

  1. Lights: every light works, including brake lights, indicators, reverse light and number plate light.
  2. Wipers and washers clear the screen. Horn works.
  3. Seat belts latch, retract and are not frayed. Seat mounts are secure.
  4. Exhaust: no blows and the mountings are secure.
  5. Tyres: tread depth, cuts, bulges and age. Check the spare too.
  6. Brakes pull up straight and the handbrake holds on a hill.
