Land Rover Series III 2.25 petrol: fan / auxiliary belt check

Cooling · Series III (1971–85) · 1971–1985

How often: every 6,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. A broken belt means no charging and, on most of these engines, no water pump. Carry a spare.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Spare fan/auxiliary belt (carry one in the vehicle)
Tools
  • Spanners
  • Ruler

Step by step

  1. With the engine stopped, inspect the belt for cracks across the ribs, glazing, fraying and oil contamination.
  2. Check tension: about ½ in (12 mm) deflection midway along the longest run under firm thumb pressure. Self-tensioning belts: check the tensioner sits within its marks and does not judder with the engine running.
  3. Spin the alternator (or dynamo), water pump and idler pulleys by hand where you can. Listen for rumbling bearings.
  4. On a dynamo (Lucas C40, early vehicles): put 2–3 drops of engine oil in the hole in the rear end-plate bearing.
