Range Rover Classic 3.5 / 3.9 / 4.2 V8 fuel injection: borg warner transfer box & viscous coupling check
Transmission · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1985–1996
How often: every 24,000 mi or 2 yrs, whichever comes first. The chain stretches and the viscous coupling can seize. A seized coupling winds up the driveline on tight turns and wears tyres and the box itself.
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
Parts
Transfer box fluid (Borg Warner 13-61 chain-drive box with viscous coupling: ATF Dexron IID, ≈1.7 L · or gear-driven LT230: 80W-90, ≈2.8 L. Identify yours before buying oil)
Tools
Jack
Axle stand
Drain tray
Step by step
Change the transfer box fluid with the specified fluid only (Borg Warner boxes do not take LT230 gear oil).
Viscous coupling test: on level ground, jack one wheel clear, engine off, in neutral. Turn the raised wheel by hand with a long bar or a helper. A healthy coupling lets it turn steadily against some resistance; if it locks solid, the coupling is seizing.
On a drive, slow tight turns on tarmac should feel smooth. Crabbing, tyre scrub or a clunk on full lock point to the coupling.
