Range Rover Classic 3.5 V8 carburettor: change gearbox & transfer box oil
Transmission · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1970–1985
How often: every 24,000 mi or 2 yrs, whichever comes first. Fresh oil keeps the synchromesh and transfer box bearings healthy.
Some of these intervals are more frequent than Land Rover's original schedule. That is deliberate for older vehicles.
Main gearbox
LT95 4-speed with integral transfer box (to 1982): main box 2.6 L of 15W-50/20W-50 engine oil or Gearoil 30 (never thick gear oil: its pump can shear); from 1982 LT77 5-speed (ATF Dexron IID, ≈2.2 L) or A727 3-speed automatic (ATF Dexron IID, ≈8.5 L)
Transfer box
LT95 integral (to 1982); LT230 from 1982: SAE 90 EP or 80W-90, ≈2.8 L
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.
