Range Rover Classic 3.5 V8 carburettor: twin carburettor balance & damper oil

Fuel & air · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1970–1985

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Unbalanced carbs give lumpy idle and poor economy.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Carb damper oil (SAE 20)
Tools
  • Airflow meter (Synchrometer) or tube
  • Screwdrivers

Step by step

  1. Top up both dashpot dampers to about ½ in below the top of the hollow piston rod.
  2. Warm the engine fully. Slacken the linkage between the carbs.
  3. Balance the airflow of both carbs at idle with an airflow meter, then retighten the linkage.
  4. Set idle speed and mixture. Check the throttle cable and kickdown (automatics) adjust correctly.
