Land Rover Series I 2.0 diesel: inspect brake shoes, cylinders & hoses

Brakes · Series I (1948–58) · 1957–1958

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Seized or leaking wheel cylinders are common on vehicles that sit for long periods.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Brake shoes (axle set, if worn)
  • Wheel cylinders (if leaking)
  • Flexible brake hoses (if cracked)
Tools
  • Jack & axle stands
  • Brake cleaner
  • Dust mask

Step by step

  1. Remove each drum. Do not blow the dust about; wipe with brake cleaner.
  2. Check lining thickness and that linings are not oily.
  3. Peel back the wheel cylinder boots. Fluid behind them means a leak; replace the cylinder.
  4. Check every flexible hose for cracks and bulges, and the steel pipes for rust under the clips.
