Land Rover Series IIA 2.25 petrol: clean oil-bath air cleaner

Fuel & air · Series IIA (1961–71) · 1961–1971

How often: every 6,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. The oil bath only traps dirt while the oil is clean and at the right level.

Air filterOil-bath cleaner, ≈0.85 L (1.8 US pt) engine oil

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Engine oil for the bath (to the level mark (≈0.85 L))
Tools
  • Paraffin or diesel for cleaning
  • Container
  • Screwdriver

Step by step

  1. Release the clips and lift the oil-bath cleaner out (it is under the bonnet on the left side on most Series models).
  2. Lift out the wire-mesh element and wash it in paraffin or diesel. Let it drain.
  3. Empty the bowl, scrape out the sludge, wipe it clean.
  4. Refill with engine oil to the level mark. Oil-bath cleaner, ≈0.85 L (1.8 US pt) engine oil.
  5. Refit the element and bowl. Check the hose to the carburettor or inlet manifold for splits and loose clips.
