Land Rover Series III 2.6 six-cylinder petrol: carburettor service & damper oil

Fuel & air · Series III (1971–85) · 1971–1980

How often: every 6,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. The Zenith-Stromberg dashpot damper needs oil or the engine stumbles when you open the throttle.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Damper oil (SAE 20 engine oil or carb damper oil)
  • Fuel pump bowl gasket (if needed)
Tools
  • Screwdrivers

Step by step

  1. Unscrew the damper cap on top of the carburettor and top up the hollow piston rod with oil to about ¼ in below the top.
  2. Clean the fuel pump gauze and check fuel hoses.
  3. Check the linkages and set idle speed and mixture with the engine warm.
