Range Rover Classic 2.4 / 2.5 VM turbodiesel: inspect pads, discs & brake hoses

Brakes · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1986–1992

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Heavy vehicles wear pads quickly, and mud wears them faster.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Brake pads (axle set, if under 3 mm)
  • Brake discs (if scored or under minimum)
  • Flexible hoses (if cracked)
Tools
  • Jack & axle stands
  • Brake cleaner
  • Vernier

Step by step

  1. Remove the wheels. Check pad thickness; replace at 3 mm.
  2. Check discs for scoring, lips and minimum thickness (stamped on the disc or in your manual).
  3. Check the caliper pistons are not seized: the pads should move freely.
  4. Check flexible hoses and steel pipes, especially pipes on the rear axle.
