Range Rover Classic 2.4 / 2.5 VM turbodiesel: wheel bearings & hub seals

Axles · Range Rover Classic (1970–96) · 1986–1992

How often: every 24,000 mi or 2 yrs, whichever comes first. Bearing play damages hub seals, and grease from a failed seal ends up on the brakes.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Parts
  • Hub oil seals (if leaking)
  • 2 × Lock tab washers (if adjusted)
  • Wheel bearing grease
Tools
  • Jack & axle stands
  • Hub nut socket
  • Dial gauge (optional)

Step by step

  1. Jack each wheel up and check for play by rocking the tyre top and bottom.
  2. If there is play, remove the drive member and adjust the hub bearing nut to the end-float in your manual, then fit a new lock tab washer.
  3. Check the drive member splines and the axle shaft splines for wear.
