Range Rover P38 4.0 / 4.6 V8: check gearbox, transfer & axle oil levels
Transmission · Range Rover P38 (1994–2002) · 1994–2002
How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Low oil in the transfer box or diffs wears gears and bearings quickly.
Main gearbox
Automatic: ZF 4HP24 (4.0) or GM 4L80-E (4.6): ATF Dexron III, ≈9.7 L from dry · manual R380 (4.0): ≈2.7 L
Transfer box
Borg Warner 44-62 chain-drive box with viscous coupling, ≈2.3 L: use the fluid in your handbook (it is not the LT230 oil)
Differentials
80W-90 hypoid, ≈1.7 L each axle
Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Step by step
Park level. Remove the level plugs on the gearbox, transfer box and both diffs in turn and top up each.
Check the transfer box output seals: oil leaking onto the handbrake drum (rear of the transfer box) stops the handbrake working.
Check the axle and gearbox breather pipes are not kinked or blocked.
