Range Rover P38 4.0 / 4.6 V8: fuel injection checks & fuel filter

Fuel & air · Range Rover P38 (1994–2002) · 1994–2002

How often: every 12,000 mi or year, whichever comes first. Air leaks, a dirty throttle body and an old fuel filter cause most fuel-injected V8 running faults.

Work safely: support the vehicle on axle stands, never a jack alone; let it cool first. Check figures against your workshop manual. You do this work at your own risk.

Step by step

  1. Check the plenum and intake hoses for splits and loose clips; listen for hissing at idle.
  2. Clean the throttle body and the idle control valve or stepper motor passages.
  3. Read any stored fault codes (14CUX, GEMS or Bosch).
  4. Renew the fuel filter every second year: depressurise the system first and catch the fuel.
